## Why Santa Teresa draws yogis

Yoga arrived here with the surfers, and the two fit together naturally: a morning surf, a slow afternoon, an evening class as the light goes gold. Today there's yoga at every level, from a single drop-in class to month-long teacher trainings, and plenty of hotels have their own open-air shala. Many classes look straight out over the jungle or the Pacific.

The scene is relaxed and international. Vinyasa and hatha are the most common styles, with yin, restorative, kundalini and breathwork classes easy to find. Schedules shift with the seasons and with which teachers are in town, so check the current timetable a day or two ahead.

## Drop-in classes

**[Natural Integrative Wellness](/natural-integrative-wellness/)** has run daily yoga in Santa Teresa since 2004, making it one of the longest-running places to practice on the coast. It's based at Hotel Tropico Latino, by the beach, and alongside yoga it offers fitness classes and body treatments.

**[Horizon Hotel & Yoga Center](/horizon-hotel-yoga-center/)** sits on the hill above town with a hilltop deck and ocean views. It runs daily classes and retreats, and its vegetarian restaurant makes a good post-class breakfast.

Several hotels open their classes to non-guests too. Ask at [Funky Monkey Lodge](/funky-monkey-lodge/) and [Fuego Lodge](/fuego-lodge-affordable-private-comfort/), both of which offer yoga on site.

## Yoga stays and retreat centers

If yoga is the point of your trip, stay somewhere built around it.

- **[Indigo Yoga Resort](/indigo-yoga-resort/)** in Mal País runs daily yoga, yoga and surf packages, retreats and 200-hour teacher trainings, a few steps from the ocean.
- **[House of Shakti](/house-of-shakti/)** near Playa Hermosa is a yoga sanctuary with classes, workshops, retreats and a tantra yoga teacher training. It also hosts other teachers' retreats.
- **[Horizon Hotel & Yoga Center](/horizon-hotel-yoga-center/)** combines hotel rooms and villas with daily classes and hosted retreats.

## Surf and yoga

Surf and yoga camps package the two together, usually with lessons in the morning and yoga later in the day.

- **[Shaka Costa Rica](/shaka-beach-retreat/)** in Playa Hermosa is an adult surf camp with small surf groups, daily yoga and meals included.
- **[Pura Vida Adventures](/pura-vida-adventures/)** runs surf and yoga retreats, including women-only camps.

See our [surf guide](/surfing/) for the breaks and seasons.

## Teacher trainings

Santa Teresa is a popular place to do a yoga teacher training, thanks to the setting and the number of experienced teachers who spend the winter here. Before you sign up, check who the lead trainers are, which certification the course offers, how many hours are contact hours, and what's included in the price you're quoted. Both [Indigo Yoga Resort](/indigo-yoga-resort/) and [House of Shakti](/house-of-shakti/) list their training dates online.

## Beyond Santa Teresa

Montezuma, about 45 minutes away on the other side of the peninsula, has its own long-standing yoga community. Anamaya Resort, a yoga and wellness resort on the hill above Montezuma, runs retreats and teacher trainings. *Disclosure: Anamaya Resort shares an owner with santa-teresa.com. See [about us](/about/).*

## Spa and bodywork

After a week of surfing, a massage is hardly a luxury. [Skin & Soul Holistics](/skin-and-soul-holistics/) is a natural day spa in Santa Teresa, and several yoga hotels offer treatments. Our [spa guide](/spas-in-santa-teresa/) has more.

## Tips for practicing here

- **Bring or rent a mat.** Most studios provide mats, but if you'll practice daily, your own travel mat is more hygienic.
- **Mind the heat.** Midday classes in an open-air shala can be hot. Early morning and late afternoon are cooler.
- **Bugs and rain.** Use repellent for sunset classes, and expect afternoon rain in the green season.
- **Cash or app.** Some studios take card or app bookings, others prefer cash or local transfer. Ask first.
