Casas De Soleil is a small group of 4 rental villas in tropical gardens at Playa Carmen, the beach at the junction where Santa Teresa and Mal País meet. Each villa has its own kitchen and parking, and guests share a pool. It's best for families and groups of friends who want a house of their own close to the sand.

What it's like

Casas De Soleil is a cluster of 4 separate rental houses set in tropical greenery at Playa Carmen. Instead of a hotel with a lobby and a restaurant, you get your own house with a kitchen, a shared pool to cool off in and the beach a short walk away. There's a concierge service if you want help with tours or plans, but day to day you're on your own schedule.

Playa Carmen is a handy spot to be based. It's the beach right at the main junction, so the shops, cafes and surf schools of Santa Teresa are to the north and the quieter, rockier coast of Mal País is to the south. Playa Carmen itself has a mellow beach break that's popular with surf schools.

The villas

Each house has a name and a different layout:

  • Casa Grande: 2 bedrooms, 2 beds and 1 bathroom, for up to 4 guests.
  • Casa Hemingway: 2 bedrooms, 4 beds and 2 bathrooms, for up to 4 guests.
  • Casa Romantica: 2 bedrooms, 3 beds and 2 bathrooms, for up to 5 guests.
  • Casa Mirador: the largest, with 4 bedrooms, 6 beds and 3 bathrooms, for up to 8 guests.

All of them come with a fully stocked kitchen, toiletries and space to park 2 vehicles. The pool is shared between the villas. Details like air conditioning in each bedroom and wifi aren't spelled out on the official site, so check the individual listing before you book.

Who it suits (and who it doesn't)

This works well for families, groups of friends and anyone staying more than a few nights who'd rather cook breakfast at home and spend the money on dinners out. Two families traveling together could take neighboring villas, and Casa Mirador alone can handle a group of 8.

It's not the right pick if you want hotel service, a restaurant on site or a front desk open around the clock. Solo travelers will probably find a 2-bedroom house more space than they need.

Getting there

The villas give their address as Playa Carmen, Santa Teresa. Coming in on the main road from Cóbano, you reach the Playa Carmen junction where the road meets the coast; the beach is right there. Exact directions come with your booking. Most people arrive by car or shuttle via the Paquera ferry, or fly to the Cóbano airstrip and take a short transfer. See our travel guide for the details.
