Stay in north Santa Teresa if you want to walk to restaurants, bars and surf, around Playa Carmen if you want the most central base, in Mal País for quiet and sunsets, and in Playa Hermosa for space and beginner waves. Every hotel below was checked as open in October 2026.
First, pick your area
The coast road runs north to south for several kilometers, and where you stay shapes your whole trip. Walking from one end to the other in the heat, on a dusty or muddy road, isn't much fun, so pick the area that matches what you want to do most. Our Mal País vs Santa Teresa vs Playa Hermosa guide goes deeper.
- North Santa Teresa: The busiest, most social part of town, with many restaurants, cafes, shops and bars along the road and the surf at La Lora and Playa Santa Teresa out front. Best if you want to walk everywhere and don't mind some noise.
- South Santa Teresa and Playa Carmen: The center of the area, close to the main junction, supermarkets, services and the beginner surf at Playa Carmen. A practical base for first-timers.
- Mal País: Rocky coast, small coves, sunsets and a much slower pace. Best for couples and anyone who wants quiet evenings and doesn't mind driving to dinner.
- Playa Hermosa: North of town, with a long, flat beach and gentle waves. Best for families, surf camps and longer stays. You'll want wheels.
Wherever you stay, think about the hill. Many places with ocean views sit up steep roads that are tough to walk, especially at night. If you won't have a car or ATV, stay close to the main road.

Booking tips
- High season runs from mid-December through Easter, and the best places fill early, especially over Christmas, New Year and Easter week. Book months ahead for those dates.
- Green season (about May to November) is quieter, and some hotels and restaurants close for a few weeks around September and October. Check before you book.
- Air conditioning isn't universal. If you need it, confirm it's in your room type.
- Power and water cuts happen now and then. Ask whether the property has a backup generator if you'll be working online.
- Getting around: if your stay is up a hill or far from the center, plan on renting a car, ATV or scooter. See getting to Santa Teresa.
